About My Work

The endless push and pull of life’s phases, the evolution of each of us across a
lifetime. Sometimes punctuated violently by loss and renewal, one door slamming
shut, another swinging open. Sometimes a passive but persistent trickle, a
whisper resisted at first until the trickle becomes a flood.

My work dives into that process of personal growth and exploration, the
movement and energy of the internal struggle, and the ultimate personal
transformation that arises from those processes.

I explore this dynamic process using ceramics, paper, and natural materials
creating figurative and abstract sculptures that merge in and out of richly textured
organic free flowing forms.

At the core of my work: the peace I found in the solitude and majestic power of
the wilderness in the Southwest and later in my travels abroad. The spirit of those
wild open spaces; its colors, movement, and natural forms, is woven into each
creation. It is in these still places we give ourselves space to explore.

My ceramic skulls are yet another reflection of these motives but with a cultural
twist. They reflect the deep influence of Mexican culture on my life while living in
Arizona. Each November in Mexico the dead are honored through The Day of the
Dead celebration, bringing those who have passed close to their loved ones once
again. Central to the celebration are images of skulls erupting in brightly colored
flowers. I was captivated not only by the beautiful imagery of new life
transforming death, but the open embrace of loss, and the powerful healing it
brings. An important reminder for all life’s changes and transitions.

Ultimately, my work is an invitation to reflect on our journeys of self-exploration;
the dreams, stories, and memories we use to define ourselves and what we wish
to become.
